It’s fireworks season, if you “remember, remember..”. in previous years it was limited to just the 5th November. However in more recent times firework season extends from Halloween to the end of November (arguably even to the New Year)!
Starting with Halloween parties, then bonfire night itself, through to carnival season and beyond lots of us will be watching displays wrapped up for the colder autumnal/winter temperatures and if you’re lucky there might be a Hot Chocolate on offer.. but we’ve got something better! The team at Hocus have put together another fantastic cocktail receipe perfect for a cold evening stood around a bonfire or watching a fireworks display. Spiced Hocus-Rum Apple Cider
The drink has a rich, deep amber hue, reminiscent of the vibrant autumn leaves. It’s garnished with a slice of apple, adding a touch of natural brightness against the warm color of the liquid. A sprinkle of nutmeg rests delicately on the surface, hinting at the comforting spices within.

The first sip reveals a harmonious blend of sweet apple cider and the robust, complex flavors of the Hocus rum. The natural sweetness of the apple cider is enhanced by the honey, while the Hocus rum adds a depth of character with hints of vanilla, oak, and a subtle caramel undertone. The cinnamon and cloves provide a gentle, warming spice that lingers on the palate, creating a well-balanced and comforting sensation. Enhanced by your surroundings and the fireworks!
Ingredients
- 250 ml apple cider
- 50ml Hocus rum
(mixed with spirit base) - 1 tablespoon honey
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 2-3 whole cloves
- 1 slice of apple (for garnish)
- A pinch of nutmeg (for garnish)
Method
In a small saucepan, combine the apple cider, honey, cinnamon stick, and cloves.
Heat the mixture over medium heat until it’s hot but not boiling.
Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the Hocus rum.
Strain the mixture into a mug or heatproof glass.
Garnish with a slice of apple and a pinch of nutmeg.
Serve warm and enjoy while watching the fireworks!
Low alcohol version
Substitute the cider for apple juice, or if you’re feeling particulary adventurous – juice the apples you have left over from apple bobbing during your Halloween party!
Make the Hocus rum with 50ml tonic water (instead of the spirit as per instructions)
Enjoy your fireworks with a warm cocktail!
The finish is long and satisfying, leaving a lingering warmth from the spices and a subtle sweetness that beckons another sip.
